Lethbridge CollegeCanada

English Language Centre

Would you like to study English in a friendly, peaceful community? Enjoy the warm hospitality of a Western Canadian host family?  Study at a college where less than 5% of the students are from other countries?

Then Lethbridge College is the right choice for you!  Established in 1957, LC was Canada’s first public community college.  Today, it has grown to a thriving, modern educational centre of over 7,000 students.  The College is home to nationally-acclaimed sports teams and award-winning instructors, and boasts a facility complete with a recreation complex, playing fields, a library and media centre, cafeteria and dining room, bookstore, counselling services, and computers laboratories throughout the complex.  International students can begin their studies in the English Language Centre, and continue in any of 50 career training or full university transfer programs.  The ambiance is friendly, classes are small, and satisfaction is high.

The College is located at the south end of the city resting on Southern Alberta’s majestic coulees overlooking the Oldman River and the Rocky Mountains to the west.  Lethbridge has a population of over 80,000, and is the service centre of Southern Alberta.  It can be reached by air, with daily 30-minute flights from Calgary, Alberta to the Lethbridge Airport, or you may wish to rent a car or take a bus for the two-hour drive south from Calgary.  Either way, the trip is unforgettable, with mountains and rolling hills to the west, and waving wheatfields to the east.  Lethbridge offers everything of a much larger city, including several shopping malls, live theatre, symphony orchestra, nightclubs and much more.  Warm westerly winds called chinooks create warm summers and mild winters, so the climate is temperate by Canadian standards.  Adventurous newcomers to Lethbridge are but a short distance from Rocky Mountain national parks and ski resorts, two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and an abundance of natural scenery that invites outdoor living.

The English Language Centre at Lethbridge College has been offering English as a second language (ESL) training for over 35 years.  Students 18 years of age and over can study academic ESL for a full or partial semester throughout the year.  Classes are small--average 17 students—and the Centre provides a warm family environment to students from all corners of the globe.  ESL instructors are highly qualified and experienced, and work hard to provide personalized language training to all students.

International students have two options for accommodations: homestay or College residence.  The host family experience is an important part of learning a language.  Living with a host family gives the international student an opportunity to practice English and to learn about Canadian culture first hand.  However, students can also choose to live in College Residence and share a suite with other College students, where they will learn to live in a Canadian group environment.

If you are interested in specialized group programs, we may have just what you are looking for.  Since 1991, The English Language Centre has provided year-round English language training to international groups.  Several thousand students have benefited from specially tailored programs which include ESL classes, accommodation, field trips and cross-cultural activities.  Interested?  Just contact the Director for a quotation designed to meet your needs.

Lethbridge College is also proud to offer a service to English language programs abroad:  English program evaluation and recognition.  The College will send specialized consultants to your school to work with you and your staff in meeting international English-language standards.  The result?  Full program recognition by Lethbridge College, an acknowledged leader in this specialized field.  To date, three schools In Mexico have been involved in this process, and they are delighted positive changes to their English programs.

As you can see, Lethbridge College has it all from academic English courses through to university transfer; from specialized group programs to EFL program recognition.  Our diversity and flexibility have made us an acknowledged national leader in English Language Training.  Why not give us a try?
